This is my first time posting here and I wanted to ask about the mental health coverage of UMR insurance since that's what my new job is offering. So I read the plan uses the UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network, and I'm really concerned about being able to keep my current therapist. They're a psychologist I've been seeing for a while, and the thought of starting over is pretty stressful. Has anyone had recent experience with UMR for therapy or psychiatric care? Is it hard to get claims approved? I'm not sure if I'm on a PPO or HMO yet, so any info on either would be helpful.

Your main task is to learn if your plan is a PPO or an HMO, as this changes the answer. A PPO plan may provide partial payment for an out-of-network therapist, while an HMO plan almost always requires you to use someone in-network. Verify your psychologist's status in the UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network through the UMR portal or by calling member services. Claim approvals are most straightforward when you use network providers and obtain any required preauthorizations for care.
