I need some insights for this situation. my sister would like to know how health insurance works. So she has a $1500 deductible and $2000 our of pocket max. Her understanding was she would pay that $1500 first, then insurance would start covering things. Her claims billed to the insurance are over $15,000 but her patient responsibility for the past year has only been about $500! How much do you think have been covered when she haven't even hit my deductible?

If she has only paid $500 out of over $15K billed, then surely, the insurance is covering way more than just post deductible stuff, her understanding is too black and white, it's not just pay then cover; it's way more layered and a lot of claims get discounted or fully covered before hitting the deductible

Yeah, insurance can really help take the edge off costs, especially before you hit that pesky deductible. Think about it, stuff like preventive care or services that are part of your network can come at significantly lower rates. That $15k bill she got? It's entirely possible that steep number is way less after those network discounts come into play. Has she had a chance to look at her EOBs yet? They usually break down all those adjustments, and it can be super helpful to see what's really going on.

Yeah, that can be confusing. Good thing the commenters here already gave their insights too. Anyway, preventive care or negotiated rates might not count toward the deductible but still get partially or fully covered, as far as I know. It appears like her insurance kicked in more than she expected. :)

It seems like some services were either fully covered, like preventive care, or got a bit of a discount thanks to network agreements. The good news is that those discounts don't go toward her deductible, so they still help lower her out-of-pocket costs. Every little bit counts, right?
